Models Direct’s Favourite Stories: 2011

As 2011 draws to a close, everyone in the Models Direct offices have been chatting about their favourite modelling related articles of the year, and there have certainly been plenty of them. Our writers have covered all kinds of items – from the increasing popularity of our favourite UK band, the quirky ‘Council Estate Supermodels‘, to the bra modelling skills of transgender model Andrej Pejic. Diversity has been the buzzword of the year and we can’t think of a better one here at Models Direct! For more on our top modelling stories of 2011 read on.

Mature models

We were delighted to share the story of Cameron Dell’Orefice back in November. This 80 year old model first came into the public eye in 1946 when she covered Vogue aged just 15. She has since appeared on the prestigious magazine’s cover an impressive six times! Dell’Orefice continues to model for brands such as Rolex and Chanel and is not alone in her continued success. We also highlighted the work of 70 year old mature model Valerie Pain during 2011. She appeared on the catwalk for Fyodor Podgorny and Golan Frydman’s feminine and edgy spring collection this year.

Plus-size-models

You may remember Models Direct bringing you news of research that came to light this year which suggested that greater diversity of models in advertising, magazines, fashion and on TV – including body shapes and size – is the number one strategy that would help to promote positive body image. This was all the more reason for us celebrate 2011’s July issue of Vogue Italia entitled ‘Real Beauties‘ and featuring three of our favourite plus-size models – Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine and Robyn Lawley.

Diverse models

We were delighted when Vogue Italia embraced more model diversity with this year’s ‘Black Allure‘ issue. The stunning models in this issue included Ajak Deng, Chanel Iman, Arlenis Sosa Pena, Jourdan Dunn, Melodie Monrose, Lais Ribeiro, Rose Cordero, Mia Aminata Niaria, Sessilee Lopez, Joan Smalls and Georgie Baddiel. Gorgeous. Meanwhile, Jade Thompson flew the flag for mixed race and red haired models when she won Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model. As a modelling agency that promotes diversity we absolutely love her unique look and were sure to let you know about these two great stories.

Child Models

Back in October we reported on exciting research from Nielsen IAG which shows advertising campaigns featuring child models and actors to be extraordinarily effective. This may explain the incredible success of the recent John Lewis Christmas advertisement featuring previously unknown child actor Lewis McGowan, which we wrote about just last month.

Other favourite Models Direct stories from 2011 covered, Lady Gaga’s modelling debut. Vogue’s ‘Alexander the Great‘ shoot; Gisele’s ‘Best Green International Award’ win; the ‘gender-bending’ advertisement in support of Gay Men’s Health Crisis and the fight against AIDS and we also loved getting to know our Dirty Sexy Things favourite – male model BB – better!

If you have a favourite Models Direct story of 2011 we would love to hear what it is.
