Doutzen Kroes "Too Fat"

Who would ever call Victoria’s Secret Model Doutzen Kroes “Too Fat”? We think she may be telling porky pies, though she clearly isn’t eating them…

“Diet is 70 per cent of what your body looks like,” said Victoria’s Secret model Doutzen Kroes talking to the Telegraph on Monday last week.
It is possible that she forgot to consider genetics.

When 28-year-old Dutch model spoke to reporter Tamsin Blanchard of her experience in the industry – and the secrets behind her super-healthy look – we admit that we couldn’t help being impressed. She is astoundingly fit and beautiful with a sickeningly wholesome outlook. But she seems to have forgotten that all the exercise and dieting in the world wouldn’t make it possible for most of us to compete with her appearance.

Telling of life before modelling Kroes explained: “I biked to school every day, about 25km there and back. My mum would say, if you go on your bike it will make you stronger. I think it did. I see a lot of Dutch women on their bikes with their kids and their groceries and it makes me happy to see that, it’s how we are, and how I was raised.

“In the countryside I was always outside. I never even thought about my looks. We didn’t have social media so we couldn’t look at other girls and pictures from magazines. We didn’t really buy a lot of magazines; my mum and dad would just read papers. It was a different world, I realise now.”

It certainly was, and Kroes has not completely let it go. It is clear from her incredible figure that she still makes exercise a major priority in her life, and much as we’d like to find a reason to disapprove of this beautiful woman’s looks, muscle-tone like that simply does not come from starving yourself. Kroes says she favours boxing and ballet in order to maintain it and it is clear that she is committed to these challenging pursuits.

However, she says exercise alone is not enough, and has revealed the ways in which she alters her diet to ensure that she looks her best when a VS show is coming up.

“For the show, there is no retouching,” she says. “We can’t escape from the truth. There are millions of people watching – and even people watching live – so it’s really important to work out a lot, which I do, and I definitely change my diet.

“Diet is 70 per cent of what your body looks like. You can work out all you like, but if you don’t eat well…

“I stop drinking [alcohol] a month before the show, and cut sugar. I still eat carbs because to have just protein and vegetables, for me it doesn’t work. But I eat just one potato with some fish and greens – very basic and happy food.”

Her diet is clearly very strict at times but Kroes is not the kind of emaciated size zero sample size that leaves us all horrified here in the Talent Management offices when we see it. She is very happy with her quite muscular appearance, and who wouldn’t be? Even with the best diet and exercise regime in the world looks like hers are unattainable for most of us mere mortals.

“I’m not a sample size at all,” Kroes confirms. “At some shows I know they have been using very young girls who have not gone into the change of the body yet – no hips, no boobs.

“I’m 28 and I’ve had a baby… Once in a while you run into the fact that things are not fitting the way they should be. But I joke about it and say ‘What 13-year-old girl is wearing this?’

“If they think I’m too fat, I’d rather not do the job – because I am super healthy and fit and I’m so happy the way I am.”

We’re glad Doutzen is happy with the way she is (!) and we’re not surprised. But ‘too fat’? Really? We doubt anyone has ever uttered those words in her presence as she looks today, and if they have we’d really like to see their abs…
