{"id":6234,"date":"2012-02-02T15:53:00","date_gmt":"2012-02-02T15:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.talentmanagement.com\/blog\/?p=6234"},"modified":"2012-02-02T16:34:03","modified_gmt":"2012-02-02T16:34:03","slug":"i-want-muscle-film-challenges-perception-of-female-beauty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.talentmanagement.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/i-want-muscle-film-challenges-perception-of-female-beauty\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;I Want Muscle&#8217; Film Challenges Perception Of Female Beauty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/27038736?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/27038736\">&#8216;I want Muscle&#8217; a film by Elisha Smith-Leverock Winner of the 2011 ASVOFF MK2 Grand Prix<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/blackmask\">Elisha Smith-Leverock<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by body diversity in the fashion industry, this short film by Elisha Smith-Leverock has become an instant hit in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.modelsdirect.com\/become-a-model\" target=\"_blank\">Models Direct<\/a> offices, and we\u2019re not the only ones loving it.<\/p>\n<p>Entitled &#8216;I want Muscle&#8217;, the film was awarded the Grand Prize at the 2011 <a title=\"A Shaded View of Fashion Film\" href=\"http:\/\/ashadedviewonfashionfilm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">A Shaded View of Fashion Film<\/a> Festival, held at the Center Pompidou in Paris, and watching it, it\u2019s easy to see why.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nPresenting a glimpse into the world of British female bodybuilder Kizzy Vaines, the film not only plays with taboos and gender stereotypes, but it also explores a different kind of female beauty.<\/p>\n<p>I Want Muscle was partly influenced by a presentation from body diversity campaigners Caryn Franklin and Debra Bourne of All Walks at a dinner hosted by The W Project.<\/p>\n<p>Charmaine Ayden, also from All Walks, recently asked Elisha how Caryn and Debra&#8217;s speech inspired her to deal with the topic of beauty and diversity. \u201cOften when you\u2019re involved in the fashion industry, you\u2019re not always aware of the issues that other people are fighting against,&#8221; she answered. &#8220;You frequently just accept the established \u2018wrongs\u2019 and become a part of a \u2018fashion bubble\u2019. So when Caryn and Debra were talking about their intentions for All Walks Beyond the Catwalk, and how they\u2019re attempting to introduce different types of women and bodies into a very close-minded industry, it just stuck with me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been times when I\u2019ve thought \u2018well of course I could use a \u2018different\u2019 body-type for one of my fashion films\u2019, but I haven\u2019t entirely considered the implications that it has. For instance, many designers won\u2019t consider lending garments to someone that isn\u2019t a sample size, including a body-builder. The subjects that Caryn and Debra spoke about at The W Project dinner mulled around in my head along with some other catalysts, from that point the ideas just exploded into I Want Muscle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This film successfully breaks the traditional ideas of femininity in fashion by using imagery conventionally perceived as glamourous, sexy, soft and feminine, and juxtaposing it with displays of pure strength.
