Due for publication in the US in October this year, the controversial book, aimed at 6 to 12 year olds, tells the story of a 14-year-old girl called Maggie who \u201cis transformed from being extremely overweight and insecure to a normal-sized girl who becomes the school football star\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough time, exercise and hard work, Maggie becomes more and more confident and develops a positive self-image,\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, the book\u2019s potentially harmful message has already generated extensive criticism and debate from the Talent management team, as well as industry experts and concerned parents. Campaign for Body Confidence co-founder Jo Swinson MP is among them. \u201cA book about dieting aimed at 6-12 year olds is deeply concerning,\u201d said\u00a0Swinson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt sends a careless message to young and impressionable girls that being skinny is the only way to succeed in life, and perpetuates the myth that dieting is healthy.\u00a0 Instead we should be promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging children to develop confidence through activity and sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur visual culture is full of unrealistic and idealised imagery of women\u2019s bodies as it is, without this new added pressure from a children\u2019s story to see being thin and the be-all and end-all,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>What are your thoughts on the book\u2019s concept?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This month, we want to hear your thoughts on the yet-to-be-released children\u2019s book \u2018Maggie Goes on A Diet\u2019 by Paul Kramer.
