Two months on we can confirm that this extraordinary young lady has been successful in her efforts &#8211; having rallied an impressive 84,000+ petition signatures!<\/p>\n<p>Bluhm\u2019s petition &#8211; entitled \u201cSeventeen Magazine: Give Girls Images of Real Girls!\u201d &#8211; gained our attention back in May when we read her comments about the ways in which she felt that photoshopped <a href=\"http:\/\/www.modelsdirect.com\/become-a-model\/women\/looks-types\/\" title=\"models\" target=\"_blank\">models<\/a> and celebrities were affecting her peers. With a wisdom beyond her years she directed attention at <em>Seventeen<\/em>, forcing them to think twice about the message they send out to girls her age.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At the time she wrote: \u201cGirls want to be accepted, appreciated and liked. And when they don\u2019t fit the criteria, some girls try to \u2018fix\u2019 themselves. This can lead to eating disorders, dieting, depression and low self-esteem. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo girls today, the word \u2018pretty\u2019 means skinny and blemish-free. Why is that, when so few girls actually fit into such a narrow category? It\u2019s because the media tells us that \u2018pretty\u2019 girls are impossibly thin with perfect skin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a teenage girl, and I don\u2019t like what I see. I want to see regular girls that look like me in a magazine that\u2019s supposed to be for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now we can reveal that <em>Seventeen<\/em> magazine has taken these heartfelt words on board. Editor-in-chief, Ms Shokot has responded to the teen\u2019s campaign with what she describes as a Body Peace Treaty. The treaty has been endorsed by both the <em>National Eating Disorders Association<\/em> and the <em>Commission for Positive Images of Women and Girls<\/em>, and includes the promise that <em>Seventeen<\/em> will \u2018never change girls\u2019 body or face shapes\u2019 and will \u2018celebrate every kind of beauty\u2019 within its pages.<\/p>\n<p>Only yesterday Models Direct reported on controversy surrounding a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talentmanagement.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/victoria%E2%80%99s-secret-swimwear-model-photoshopped-or-not\/\" title=\"Victoria's Secret\" target=\"_blank\">Victoria\u2019s Secret<\/a> advertisement that had sparked furious accusations of excessive photoshopping and inappropriate promotion of the idea that \u2018skinnier is better\u2019. It seems that many of those within the industry still need reminders about what is and is not good marketing technique, and Julia may be the girl to do it.<\/p>\n<p>Next on the list for Miss Bluhm is Teen Vogue. She has begun a new petition directed at the magazine and demanding \u201cTeen Vogue: Give Us Images of Real Girls!\u201d and her new petition already has over 10,000 signatures!
